And was there a lamb? (2003) is a Christmas carol for unaccompanied choir, SATB, lasting about three minutes, and setting the composer’s own text (below).
And was there a lamb
And was there a lamb
Present at the birth of God?
Innocent lamb, a sacrifice
This child although a king
Born at a lowly inn
This child is our Lord Jesus Christ
And were there wise men
Bringing gifts from distant lands?
Worshipping where the baby lies
Gold for a king they bear
Incense for a holy boy
Myrrh to bury Jesus Christ
What shall the shepherds give?
Little they have
Just their pure hearts, beyond all price
Mary the mild
Mother of the living God
Looks on the babe with shining eyes
And were the angels there
Singing hosannas clear
Praising the king Lord Jesus Christ
And was there a lamb
Present at the birth of God?
Innocent lamb, a sacrifice
